RuptureXIBT Writing Workshop with Anna Johnson (December)

Writing with light.

The inspiration for this month’s workshop will be light. Drawing on works including Kerri ní Dochartaigh’s beautiful memoir Cacophony of Bone, and poems by Emily Dickinson, we will look at the ways in which light can create atmosphere and mood, indicate the seasons and draw the reader in. We will also consider how it often falls to writers to shine a light on the complex and often unspoken intricacies of the world – as Emily Dickinson puts it, “The Poets light but Lamps”.

Develop or kick-start your writing practice by joining us for this generative and nurturing afternoon of readings, writing exercises and discussion.

The Opening Chapter: A Workshop For Writers with Dr James Miller

What makes an opening chapter work? How do you grab and hold a reader’s attention? What is the balance between show and tell, between action and reflection, exposition and omission? Should a novel start ‘at the beginning’ or in the ‘middle’ or even at ‘the end’? What are the pros and cons of different points of view and different tenses?

This is a workshop for aspiring and more established writers who are struggling to start their novel. 3-5pm £10

RuptureXIBT Writing Workshop with Anna Johnson (September)

In this workshop we'll explore writing created through engaging with works of art (from painting to literature), known as ekphrastic writing. This practice moves beyond the descriptive to create its own world in response to an artwork. Together, we will look at examples of ekphrastic literature, including poetry by WH Auden. We will work through short writing exercises (drawing on RuptureXIBIT's wonderful collection of art books!) to explore how this technique can help us develop our own writing voice.
