Writing Workshop with Anna Johnson

Writing our journeys and transformations.
In this generative, explorative, creative writing workshop, we will play with ways of reimagining some of the tropes of myth, in particular magical transformations and the hero’s journey. We will use these ideas to explore ways of expressing our more ‘everyday’ transformations, and the journeys, physical and psychological, that we make.

We will look at contemporary and historical texts that draw on mythologies, including Fiona Benson’s poetry in Vertigo and Ghost and Ovid’s Metamorphoses.

Through a range of readings and short writing exercises, we will explore the ways in which we might turn to the non-human (animals, ghosts, gods…) to express our own very human experiences.

Suitable for all levels, no creative writing experience necessary

4pm-6pm!

RuptureXIBT Writing Workshop with Anna Johnson (January)

Writing with Sound workshop with Anna Johnson.
Engaging the senses is often key to drawing the reader into our writing, but sound is sometimes overlooked. This month’s writing workshop will explore how writing with and about sound - from the wind in the trees to the music that moves us - can engage the reader and enrich our writing practice.

Through readings and short writing exercises we will explore how we might bring sound into our work. We will look at a variety of texts, including poems by d/Deaf, British Jamaican poet Raymond Antrobus.

Suitable for all writing levels, from absolute beginner to experienced. 2pm-4pm

The Opening Chapter: A Workshop For Writers with Dr James Miller

What makes an opening chapter work? How do you grab and hold a reader’s attention? What is the balance between show and tell, between action and reflection, exposition and omission? Should a novel start ‘at the beginning’ or in the ‘middle’ or even at ‘the end’? What are the pros and cons of different points of view and different tenses?

This is a workshop for aspiring and more established writers who are struggling to start their novel. 3-5pm £10

RuptureXIBT Writing Workshop with Anna Johnson (September)

In this workshop we'll explore writing created through engaging with works of art (from painting to literature), known as ekphrastic writing. This practice moves beyond the descriptive to create its own world in response to an artwork. Together, we will look at examples of ekphrastic literature, including poetry by WH Auden. We will work through short writing exercises (drawing on RuptureXIBIT's wonderful collection of art books!) to explore how this technique can help us develop our own writing voice.

Rebecca Lacey - Intensive Art Mentoring Residency - Life in Ruins

My practice centres around abstract painting, photography, poetry and acting. Colour is a prominent part of my expressive language. Recently, I have become interested in creating a more textured surface using discarded paper bags, amazon packaging and organic material, to draw attention to the natural world and the cataclysmic risk we face.
