The Opening Chapter: A Workshop For Writers with Dr James Miller
What makes an opening chapter work? How do you grab and hold a reader’s attention? What is the balance between show and tell, between action and reflection, exposition and omission? Should a novel start ‘at the beginning’ or in the ‘middle’ or even at ‘the end’? What are the pros and cons of different points of view and different tenses?
This is a workshop for aspiring and more established writers who are struggling to start their novel. 3-5pm £10 Book now

About the Artists
Artist in Residence Sally Minns presents new paintings from her Becoming series and performs After Yoko: Beyond the Bag, alongside a reading about her process.
Invitational Artist in Residence, Laura E. Migliorino’s current project, The Hidden Life of Books, explores private and public collections to resurrect histories that have been forgotten, erased, or censored. During her RuptureXIBIT residency, she will also develop Bassano Reads Shakespeare — an immersive installation delving into the life of Aemelia Bassano Lanier, the first woman to publish a book of poetry in England (1611), and a figure long speculated to have inspired — or even authored — parts of Shakespeare’s works.
RuptureXIBIT founder and artist in residence Kate Howe offers a glimpse into her preparatory sketches for her annual winter installation — a luminous community artwork designed to light up the dark season from RuptureXIBIT’s front window.
